THE TIME SPENT
FEATURING
TOMMY MITCHELL
A SOLO EXHIBITION
15 FEBRUARY - 11 MARCH 2023
Last year, Tommy Mitchell’s solo exhibition debut at Band of Vices -GAZE produced a compelling body of work that was both highly regarded and widely collected. Reflecting on that show, the Baltimore-based artist knew that he needed to stretch. He took his technical curiosity to New York, spending countless hours at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and then off to Paris, where his time at The Louvre proved to be more worthy than any master class.
THE TIME SPENT...represents his encounters with Rembrandt, which moved him and inspired him, negotiating the positioning, lighting, and posture of the subjects. Along with Frans Hal, Tommy used the influence of the Dutch Masters to push his craft and technical prowess.
In the artist’s words:
“This [body of work] encompasses many meanings. The time spent to gather the experience and information to get to this point as a man. The time spent working and accumulating a skill from my talent to create these works. The time spent exploring my trajectory as a creative and what I want to share and leave as a mark on this world and so on...”
