CALVIN CLAUSELL Since the genesis of his career, Calvin Clausell has sought to bring to life the revealed moments of vulnerability and passion, Specializing in large-scale realism Oil paintings.Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. He naturally gravitated to the idea of bringing life to paper, he originally began with charcoal and graphite. Teaching himself shading techniques by observing human expression and emotion. He began oil painting after reading the book “The Artist’s Way.”“That book helped reshape my perspective as an artist, branching out and trying different mediums lead me to my true love, oil painting.” - CalvinSince transitioning to oil in 2016, he’s continued to expand on ideas and techniques while diving deeper within himself and his culture. All of his works are inspired by the black experience and what it means to be black, to be seen, elevating our light, peeling back the layers within all forms. To further express and connect to the spirituality of his works, he creates on wood panels and leaves the wood exposed to allow the natural design and flow of the wood toenhance his background and works.

CALVIN CLAUSELL - ARTIST STATEMENT My paintings are about our inability to sometimes release things that hold us back. Ourmindset that no longer serves us, the stories we tell ourselves, relationships, etc. Internally we may know what we need to grow, but it’s about allowing ourselves to release and allow it in.Once we allow ourselves to let go, we are ready to face this world with a new found faith and understanding of who we are. While his back is facing us, he is facing the world.2022 saw a significant leap in Calvin’s works, as was exemplified by successful solo shows in Turin, Italy and with his BLOOM exhibition at Band of Vices.

In  both  Monica  Ikegwu  and  Tommy  Mitchell’s subjects, there lies a quiet, defiant state of being. Notwithstanding that they are both Baltimoreans, Ms. Ikegwu and Mr. Mitchell explore the very existence of their subjects’ right to basic humanity, while unapologetically exerting their Blackness. Both artists are showing us that these youth have powerfully claimed that they too are young gods.
