My work has taken two separate directions: one in abstraction, one in representation, one formal content and one in thematic content. I continue to reconcile the two. In my abstract works, I use multiple layers of colored fields, shapes and abstract iconography. The ides to create an almost fractal image where there’s self-referentiality with the repetition of color combinations and symbols.
My work started with a formalist approach, focusing on line, color and pattern to define subjects – often the human figure of biological structure to portray “semi-self” portraits. Mental health and people of color
Self Portrait Self Portrait is an expressionist, pointillistic self-portrait. The pattern is meant to be a documentation of a meditative exercise that served as a self-soothing practice during a depressive episode. Distortion and/or disruption of the body and body parts, as seen in the right eye of Self –Portrait are recurring visual motifs in my paintings.
My passion for visual arts started at a young age with a focus on drawing and then
expanded/transformed to media arts and painting. A Basquiat exhibit at LA MOCA in
20XX was transformational – engaging and evocative. I graduated from the Orange County School of Arts and was recognized as a California Arts Scholar in 2014. My artistic journey continued at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore. At MICA, my artwork was selected for Foundation Year and Diversity Office exhibitions. The Self Portrait piece was selected for the exhibition shortlist of the 2018 XL Catlin Art Prize, premier student art completion in the United States, devoted to figurative artwork. 40 student artists were selected from over 700 submissions nationwide.
