Romare Bearden (1911-1988) was the first artist, outside of Langston Hughes that I identified with, specifically because I saw myself in him. His meticulous use of collage/mixed media had a profound impression on me, particularly due to his jazz themes, but more importantly, their social context. I’ve travelled throughout the US to view his work, however, his retrospect at San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art in 2003, left me in tears by the mere expanse of his work.
