US Solo Debut

10 September - 8 October, 2022

Band of Vices is pleased to announce, SEE ME FLOWING, the US solo exhibition debut by the Portuguese-based artist, Tiffanie Delune.

See Me Flowing presents new works by the Portuguese based, Franco-Belgian-Congolese artist, Tiffanie Delune. The first solo show of the artist’s work in the USA, this body of work embodies the artist’s ongoing personal, visual and spiritual research of the evolution of the inner self in all its forms and realms. All works were created in 2022 from her studio in Lisbon and are informed by the golden light and pastel tones of Portugal, created in the face of life’s universal and inescapable lessons.

Whilst the show represents a further step towards full abstraction, some otherworldly bodies remain in the form of Delune’s signature blooming silhouettes and deconstructed human anatomy stamped with mystical symbols. Yet, most of the works present a free abstract flow of sensual lines, geometric forms, and organic shapes. Flashbacks, family experiences, and visualisations, dialogue in dreamscapes reminiscent of forests, deserts, seas, skies, and constellations with playful elements of childhood games, festivals, and carnivals. Acrylic, spray paint, oil pastels, and paper cuts, glitter, and fine pens dance together in elaborate layers and rich colours.

Presented here are new approaches of the work, such as rounded or diamond-shape canvases and hanging loose linen, with subtle sewing, textures, and details. “I am interested in questioning the viewer’s perspective and intimate experience of the work, sending us back to our own selves and how we see and narrate our heritage, memory, desires, and reveries.”

The artist writes: “Highly biographical, I started my reflection in this body of work on whether “The Egg Or The Bird” came first, does the free spirit child is born as such, comes from its genealogy, or becomes one bird on its own? From there, I questioned the relationship to our first carrier, our mother, and how much is passed on to us from the womb and parents. In my case, generational trauma in the form of anxiety and a vision of a peaceful yet entangled baby in troubled waters that I had through hypnotherapy — pictured in “Green Is Your Favourite Colour And Blue The Colour Of My Eyes”. The caterpillar eventually cuts the umbilical cord and grows into a butterfly. Trials, visions and delusions build a powerful and clear self through seasons and time, and playful pieces such as “Wildflowers, Wildfires”, “The Unspoken Language of Intuition” and “Carrying You For A Thousand Miles” are testimony of that endless inner journey, personal calls and life’s synchronicities that we follow. Surrendering to the unknown space of becoming, being in the present and trusting the stage of acceptance, alignment, celebration and abundance are the next stages and conclusion of that visual experimentation, as seen in “The Medicine That Is Your Heart”, “Roses Falling From The Ceiling” and “Leave The Lights On” and the piece giving its name to the exhibition “See Me Flowing”.
